Sculpture of Aristides de Sousa Mendes

Portugal 2021

On July 20, 2021, a sculpture of a great diplomat, one of the Righteous Among the Nations, Aristides de Sousa Mendes was unveiled in the Parliament of Portugal. He was a man who had everything – brilliant career, love, 14 children. He risked it all when he saved more than 30 thousand people. He survived the Nazis but his own Government stripped him off everything he had, which led to a heart attack. Only after death, he received the due acknowledgement and the gratitude of descendants. To convey the dire risk and all the horror he went through, I put his portrait on a fragile line of his tie.
