One of the most significant events of the year 2000 was the opening of a monument to the Christian Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, in the center of the Muslim world, in his homeland, city of Demre (Turkey). On the feast day of St. Nicholas (December 6), in the center of the city, opposite the Church of St. Nicholas, where he served as a bishop all his life, the grand opening of the bronze image of St. Nicholas took place.

The opening was attended by representatives from 50 countries, spiritual leaders of all religious denominations, representatives of the Moscow Patriarchate. The Turks showed an unprecedented respect for our Holy One, setting it on a pedestal in the shape of the globe, showing that Nicholas the Wonderworker blesses the whole world — Christians, and Muslims, and Jews.
